The questions deck & fence staining clients ask first

Q01

How much does deck and fence staining cost in San Diego?

Deck and fence staining runs $2 to $5 per square foot, so a typical deck lands around $500 to $1,500, and fences are priced by linear foot and height. Stripping an old finish, sanding, and board repair add to the cost. We quote each project fixed after seeing the condition of the wood.

  • Typical deck: $500 to $1,500
  • Fences priced by the linear foot
  • Stripping and repair add to the rate
Q02

Should I stain or paint my deck and fence?

Stain penetrates the wood, shows the grain, wears more gracefully, and is easier to recoat, which makes it ideal for most decks and fences. Paint gives solid color and hides aged wood but can peel underfoot. We'll recommend the right system for your wood and exposure. (See our guide on whether to paint or stain a fence.)

Q03

How long will the finish last in San Diego?

A quality deck stain typically lasts two to four years on walking surfaces and longer on fences and railings, depending on sun and sprinkler exposure. Coastal UV is hard on horizontal surfaces, so we use premium products and thorough prep to stretch the life as far as it will go.

Everyone on the team was professional, prompt and responsive. Luis explained the entire process and Mel's follow-through was exceptional. They delivered on the look and feel we wanted, and we would recommend their service to anyone who owns well constructed cabinets but wants to give them a refreshing new life. The original dark cabinets showed all the fingerprints, grease and dust, but the new white finish has stronger enamel protection and is much easier to clean and maintain. And it was way more cost effective than a complete remodel, we are very happy with the results!

I called Lifetime Painting (referred by One Day Door and Closets) and met with Luis within a few days I was happy and excepted their bid. Gabriel and Carlos were wonderful to work with. They were professional, friendly and prompt everyday. I had my popcorn ceiling remove, textured and painted. I could not ask for a better job. They also painted a large living room, hallway and all my doors. Gabriel was very thorough and went above and beyond to make sure everything was done to my satisfaction. Albert replaced all my door handles for me and I appreciated Pablo came to finish all the final little touch ups. I am very happy with their work and would highly recommend them. I hope to use them again.

We are so happy with the work Lifetime Custom Painting did on our home! They painted our interior and part of the exterior, installed new baseboards, replaced the upstairs flooring, installed new vanities/toilets and completely redid our banister. Everything turned out beautiful and the attention to detail was excellent. Pablo, the project manager, was especially great to work with — professional, responsive, and made sure everything ran smoothly from start to finish. Highly recommend!

Deck & Fence Staining questions, answered

Straight answers about deck & fence staining in San Diego, from a team that's painted local homes since 2007.

Do you repair broken boards and pickets?

Yes. We replace failed deck boards, fence pickets, and rails as part of prep so the finished result is sound as well as good-looking. Repairs are quoted along with the staining.

Can you match my existing stain color?

Yes. We help you choose from transparent, semi-transparent, and solid stains and can match close to an existing color. Semi-transparent is the most popular for showing grain while adding protection.

How should I maintain it afterward?

Keep sprinklers off the wood where you can, sweep off debris, and plan to recoat high-traffic deck surfaces every couple of years. A quick maintenance coat is far cheaper than letting the wood go gray and split.
